Million Mighty Men

Help the Helpless

In Pakistan I first looked into the brown, spoon shaped eyes of an orphan. A shredded blue cotton shirt covered his frail arms. The boy reached up and I lifted him in the air. He laughed. That moment occurred ten years ago while I was in Pakistan teaching a small group of believers.

Back home, on the right side of my desk is a drawer where I placed the file containing pictures of the orphanage where that child lived. Over the years I’ve pulled out the file and thumbed through the pamphlet and pictures. I remembered the promise I made to the man who ran the orphanage, “I’ll help. I promise, one day I’ll help.” And the Spirit of God tugged at my heart.

I’ve devoted my life to challenging and equipping men to win the fight for their heart and home. But even with that high and lofty purpose, I felt something was missing. And I felt something was missing for the men I connected with across the country.

And then God tapped me on the shoulder—I’m speaking figuratively here because God didn’t literally tap me on the shoulder—and reminded me of the words of James 1:27, “Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress . . . .“

I’ve read that verse countless times. In fact, I’ve memorized it. But like a child who finally understands a math problem, I got it. I saw that loving God meant loving orphans because he loves orphans. And I did the only thing I could . . . I committed the rest of my life to rescuing as many children as possible. And that means I need men like you to lock arms with me. Because together we can do more than we ever could ever do alone.

In the summer of 2008, through an amazing set of circumstances that carried the fingerprints of God, I met the leadership team from Lifesong for Orphans. Together we’re teaming up to provide joy and purpose to orphans.
